Unlike many other mythological creatures, dragons can have a range of personalities, not to mention powers, abilities and appearance. Dragons may take on a central role in your story, or they might make a minor appearance, as a supporting character.

Either way, the name you give your dragon, can hugely impact the success of your story. Giving your dragon a name like Darren or Susan doesn’t seem right – Unless you’re writing a funny story, where the dragons act like humans. Otherwise, you would want your dragon to have an ancient (and powerful) name that suits its powers and personality. Take, for example, Lakfreean, Champion Of The Lake or Deadarisa, Healer Of The Dead. Now those are some cool dragon names!

Creating Your Own Dragon Name

Can’t find the perfect name for your dragon? Try creating your own dragon name using our simple naming technique. First, you’ll want to make a list of nouns relating to your dragon’s power or ability. As an example, here are some nouns relating to an ice dragon:

  • Ice
  • Frost
  • Snow
  • Winter

Next, you’ll want to make a list of adjectives to describe your dragon’s appearance or personality. Here are some of our examples:

  • Cold-Hearted
  • Bitter
  • Frosty
  • Chilly

Now, it’s time for the final list. In this final list, write down some location words of where your dragon was born, such as:

  • Underworld
  • North
  • Valley

Now is the magical part. Take the first three characters of a random noun from your first list. We picked the noun, Frost, so we’ll write down the letters, ‘Fro’.

Next pick a random word from your adjectives list, and take the first three characters of this word. Here we took the word, Bitter, so we have ‘Bit’.

In your last locations list, pick a random location. This time take the last three characters of this word. We picked Underworld, and so the last three letters are, ‘rld’.

Now, combine all these letters together to create your own unique dragon name. Our dragon’s name was Frobitrld. To make your dragon sound even cooler, give them a title or last name, such as Frobitrld, Lord of the Frost.

Now that’s a pretty cool dragon name, right? Here are some other cool examples we created using this technique:

  • Duostroon, Duo Of The Moon
  • Rivdeesea, Slayer Of The River
  • Torstorth, Protector Of The Tornado
  • Rivshasea, Lady Of The River
  • Blaflaano, Redeemer Of The Blaze
  • Forkinder, King Of The Forest

Go ahead and try out this technique yourself. Let us know in the comments below, what dragon names you come up with!
