Warrior Cats is a fantasy book series following the adventures of a group of wild cats. Each wild cat is part of a different clan and has their own skills, abilities, and beliefs. According to the official site, there are currently six clans, including the two newest clans (SkyClan and StarClan). Each clan has its own rules and way of living or surviving.

Warrior Cats Naming Tips & Rules
A Warrior name consists of two parts: the Prefix and the Suffix. Together, they tell a story about who the cat is.
The Prefix (The “Birth” Name)
Given by the mother at birth, the prefix usually describes the kit’s physical appearance.
- Colors/Patterns: Black, White, Silver, Dapple, Speckle
- Nature/Plants: Fern, Oak, Ivy, Heather, Birch
- Animals: Mouse, Squirrel, Hawk, Otter, Adder
- Weather: Storm, Cloud, Rain, Sun, Mist
Important Rule: A prefix never changes (unless there is a major life event, like a renaming ceremony for a traumatic injury.
The Suffix (The “Earned” Name)
Given by the Clan Leader during the warrior ceremony, the suffix represents the cat’s skills, personality, or body type.
- Skills/Combat: strike (good fighter), claw (sharpness/bravery), fang (lethality).
- Movement: step (way of walking/stalking), flight (speed/agility), leap (jumping ability).
- Physical Traits: pelt (fur color), tail (balance), ear (hearing), nose (scenting).
- Nature Elements: breeze, storm, leaf, frost, flower.
Clan-Specific Naming
Names often reflect the environment of the specific Clan. A cat’s name should feel like it belongs in their territory.
| Clan | Common Themes | Examples |
| ThunderClan | Hardwoods, forest predators, and fire. | Oakfall, Bramblefur, Firestep |
| RiverClan | Water plants, fish, shells, and smooth stones. | Reedstrike, Silverdrop, Otterstep |
| WindClan | Wind, fast animals (hares), and moorland plants. | Harewhisker, Galepelt, Swiftwing |
| ShadowClan | Pine trees, nocturnal animals, and marsh/swamp terms. | Nightfrost, Pineleaf, Frogskip |
Forbidden Naming Rules
To keep your names authentic to the books, avoid these common “Twoleg” (human) mistakes:
- No Man-Made Objects: Because Clan cats have their own unique language for the world around them, they avoid human terminology for man-made objects. Cats don’t know what “Metal,” “Steel,” “Glass,” or “Engine” are. Use Stone or Flint instead.
- No Human Concepts: While fans often get creative, traditional naming conventions usually steer clear of abstract human concepts like ‘spirit’ or ‘soul’. Avoid “Summer,” “Winter,” “Spirit,” or “Angel.” Use Greenleaf or Leaf-bare for seasons.
- The Sacred “Star”: Only a Clan Leader can have the suffix -star. This is given by StarClan at the Moonstone/Moonpool.
- The Apprentice “Paw”: All apprentices must have the suffix -paw to show they are “on the path” to becoming a warrior.
- The Sacred “Moon”: In modern Clans, naming a kit “Moon-” is often considered disrespectful to the Moonpool, the source of their connection to ancestors.
- No “Cutesy” Names: Warriors are fierce. Avoid suffixes like -fluff, -cute, or -sparkle.
Strict traditions dictate that suffixes like -paw and -star are reserved for specific ranks, as detailed in the official naming hierarchy.
Important Rule: Avoid “Triple-Nouns.” A name like Bluejayfeather is too long. Instead, pick the most important part: Bluefeather or Jayfeather.
Additional Naming Rules
From the book series, there are some extra rules to follow when creating a warrior cats name, such as:
- Cats under 6 months (kit): Cats under the age of 6 months always have the suffix, ‘Kit’ (e.g. Firekit). This lasts until they are apprenticed, which usually happens at six moons (months) of age.
- Apprentices (paw): Cats over the age of 6 months (or apprentices) have the suffix, ‘Paw’ (e.g., Firepaw). Once a kit becomes an apprentice, their suffix is changed to “paw” to symbolize the “paws” walking the path to becoming a warrior.
- Leaders (star): Leaders of clans have the suffix ‘Star’. When a deputy is accepted by StarClan as the new leader, they receive the “star” suffix (e.g., Firestar). This represents their high rank and connection to their ancestors.
- Ancient Cats (Two words): Ancient cats have a prefix and a suffix separated by a space, so their name is two words. In the Dawn of the Clans arc and the “Ancient” groups (like the Tribe of Rushing Water or the cats of the Lake before the Clans), names are typically two separate words, such as Half Moon, Gray Wing, or Clear Sky.
- Earned Suffixes: While most suffixes are chosen by the leader based on a cat’s primary skill (like ‘eye’ for good sight), a leader may choose a specific suffix to honor a massive achievement. For example, ‘pelt’ might be used for a cat who survived a specific environment, or ‘claw’ for a cat who showed incredible bravery in a specific battle.
Please Note: While rare, a cat over 6 months might still be a “kit” if their apprenticeship is delayed (due to injury or lack of mentors), and an apprentice might be older than 12 months (the usual warrior age) if they haven’t passed their assessments yet. The suffix follows the rank, not strictly the birth certificate.
In this post, we are purely suggesting names of warrior cats, not kittypets or rogue cats.
