WoF Naming Rules

In the world of Pyrrhia and Pantala, a dragon’s name isn’t just a label – it’s a reflection of their culture, habitat, and heritage. If you want your OC (Original Character) to feel like they truly belong in Tui T. Sutherland’s universe, you’ll want to follow the specific naming traditions of each tribe.

The Tribes of Pyrrhia

• SeaWings: Named after ocean life and water features. Think of things you’d find in the deep blue or along the coast. Examples: Mako, Abyss, Anemone, Current, Trench, Indigo.
• NightWings: Known for compound names (two words combined) that describe a skill, personality trait, or a destiny. Examples: Mindseeker, Starflight, Deathbringer, Secretkeeper, Moonwatcher.
• SandWings: Named after desert survival, heat, and arid landscapes. Examples: Scorpion, Sizzle, Mirage, Aloe, Agave, Burn.
• IceWings: Named after cold-weather phenomena, polar animals, or shades of white. Examples: Arctic, Winter, Frostbite, Narwhal, Glacier, Snowfall.
• RainWings: Usually named after rainforest flora and fauna, or positive adjectives that describe a dragon’s personality. Examples: Jambo, Glory, Orchid, Kinkajou, Bromeliad, Splendor.
• SkyWings: Named after birds of prey, sky colors, or fire and flight. Examples: Falcon, Vermilion, Ember, Osprey, Cardinal, Peril.
• MudWings: Named after swamp-dwelling creatures and earthy colors. Examples: Clay, Marsh, Reed, Umber, Pheasant, Crocodile.

The Tribes of Pantala

• SilkWings: Exclusively named after butterflies and moths. Examples: Blue, Luna, Swordtail, Io, Admiral, Morpho.
• HiveWings: Named after bees, wasps, and other biting/stinging insects. Examples: Cricket, Bumblebee, Katydid, Wasp, Scarab, Malachite.
• LeafWings: Named after trees, plants, and forest terminology. Examples: Sundew, Willow, Belladonna, Hazel, Sequoia, Hemlock.

Note of Naming Hybrids

• Pick one side: Use a traditional name from one of the two parent tribes (e.g., Sunny has a SandWing name despite being half NightWing).
• The “Mash-up”: Find a theme that fits both environments. A SeaWing/IceWing hybrid might be named Sleet or Iceberg, as both involve water and cold.

Pro-Tip: If you’re stuck, look at a nature documentary! Most Wings of Fire names are simply nouns found in the natural world.

IceWings are incredibly proud and aristocratic. Their names often sound “sharper” or more “formal” compared to the earthy names of MudWings or the bright names of RainWings. Using names like Subzero or Frostbite would also fit this tribe perfectly.!

RainWings

The RainWings are named after the vibrant life of the rainforest, including exotic plants, fruits, and animals, or positive adjectives that reflect beauty and prestige.

While RainWings can change their scales to any color, they are rarely named directly after a color (like “Red” or “Blue”). Instead, they are named after things that have those colours, such as Jungle (a green place).

• Amiable: A cheerful and easy-going dragon who is often the first to welcome visitors to the rainforest village.
• Bromeliad: Named after the tropical plant, this dragon has scales that naturally settle into vibrant pinks and deep greens.
• Capuchin: A high-energy, mischievous dragon named after the clever rainforest monkey; an expert at swinging through the canopy.
• Dazzling: A dragon with a flair for the dramatic who spends hours perfecting intricate, glowing scale patterns.
• Euphoria: A peaceful dragon who specializes in finding the best sun-time spots and shares a sense of calm with everyone nearby.

• Toucan: A dragon with a particularly large snout and a loud, honking laugh, named after the iconic rainforest bird.

NightWings

While their names relate to the night and mystery, the most important rule for NightWings is that their names are almost always compound words (two words put together) that describe a capability, a personality trait, or a perceived destiny.

In the books, NightWings were traditionally very prideful. They gave their dragonets “powerful” names to make them seem more intimidating or gifted than they actually were.

• Dreamstep: A quiet, graceful dragon who moves so silently through the rainforest that others often wonder if they were ever there at all.
• Shadowreader: A studious dragon who spends their nights in the library, obsessed with finding hidden meanings in ancient scrolls.
• Fearlessheart: A bold warrior known for standing their ground against any threat, regardless of the odds.
• Thoughtcatcher: A dragon with a reputation for being incredibly observant, often figuring out what others are thinking before they speak.
• Voidglider: A talented flier who loves to soar at high altitudes where the sky turns black and the stars are brightest.
• Wisdomseeker: An ambitious student who travels across Pyrrhia to learn the secrets and histories of the other dragon tribes.
• Silversight: Named for the way the moons reflect in their eyes; this dragon is known for having incredibly sharp vision in total darkness.
• Ghostwalker: A master of camouflage who uses the shadows to disappear completely, making them an expert at gathering information.
• Truthcaster: A dragon who prides themselves on their blunt honesty, regardless of whether the truth is “bitter” or “sweet.”
• Nightfury: A hot-headed dragon with a short temper, known for being a formidable opponent in any physical confrontation.

SandWings

The SandWings are named after desert animals, plants, weather patterns, and landforms. Their names often reflect the harsh, dry, and heat-filled environment of the Kingdom of Sand.

• Agave: A hardy dragon with a prickly exterior but a surprisingly sweet personality, named after the resilient desert succulent.
• Basalt: A dragon with darker, grayish-tan scales who specializes in tracking targets through the jagged, rocky outcroppings of the desert borders.

SeaWings

The SeaWings have names related to the sea, water, and aquatic life, such as Tsunami, Anemone, Turtle, and Coral. 

One thing that makes SeaWings unique is that they are the only tribe named after shades of blue and green. A SeaWing named Indigo, Azure, or Teal fits perfectly because those are the colors of the ocean.

• Abyss: A mysterious dragon with very dark, near-black scales who prefers the crushing pressure of the deepest ocean trenches.
• Barnacle: A stubborn, tough-scaled dragon who is known for sticking to their opinions no matter what.
• Cascade: A graceful flier who loves diving into the ocean from high waterfalls near the Summer Palace.

SkyWings

SkyWing names generally fall into four categories that reflect their high-altitude, high-intensity lifestyle: Birds of Prey (Kestrel, Falcon, and Eagle), Colors of the Sky and Fire (Scarlet, Azure, and Ember), Weather and Atmospheric Phenomena (Sky, Cloud, and Tempest), and Abstract “Intense” Concepts (i.e., Peril).

SkyWings are often portrayed as the most “traditional” or “militaristic” dragons. Their names are usually short, punchy, and sound a bit more serious than the whimsical names of RainWings.

• Apex: A proud, high-flying dragon who always strives to be at the top of the “Mountain Circle” social ranking.
• Bonfire: A friendly, warm-scaled dragon who loves hosting large gatherings and telling stories by the communal fire.
• Condor: A massive, broad-winged dragon named after the giant mountain bird; known for their incredible endurance during long flights.
• Crimson: A dragon with deep, blood-red scales who serves as a high-ranking officer in the SkyWing army.
• Fulmar: Named after the hardy sea-and-sky bird; a dragon who specializes in patrolling the windy coastline borders.
• Gale: A lightning-fast flier who seems to move with the speed of a mountain windstorm.

MudWings

Since MudWings live in large family units and value the earth beneath their talons, their names usually fall into these categories: Wetlands & Swamps (Marsh, Bog, and Swamp), Earthy Colours (Umber, Clay, and Ochre), Swamp Plants (Reed, Cattail, and Sedge), and Semi-Aquatic Animals (Sora, Crocodile, and Newt).

• Bayou: A laid-back dragon who knows every winding waterway in the Kingdom of Mud like the back of their talon.
• Bullfrog: A large, deep-voiced dragon known for their incredible jumping ability and a very loud, booming laugh.
• Copperhead: Named after the swamp snake; a dragon with reddish-brown scales who is a fierce protector of their siblings.
• Delta: A strategic thinker who understands how the rivers move and change the landscape after a heavy rain.
• Gator: A tough, thick-scaled warrior who prefers lurking just beneath the surface of the water to surprise their opponents.
• Loam: A dragon with soft, rich-brown scales who is an expert at finding the most fertile soil for the tribe’s medicinal plants.
• Mire: A stoic dragon who isn’t bothered by getting stuck in the thickest, stickiest mud—in fact, they prefer it.
• Peat: An older, “crusty” dragon whose scales are dark and compressed, making them nearly as hard as rock.
• Russet: A dragon with beautiful reddish-clay colored scales who is a talented potter and sculptor.
• Sediment: A quiet, thoughtful dragon who likes to sit at the bottom of shallow ponds and watch the world go by.
• Stagnant: A dragon who loves the stillest parts of the swamp and can hold their breath for twice as long as the average MudWing.
• Willow: Named after the swamp-dwelling tree; a flexible and graceful dragon who is surprisingly fast for their size.

SilkWings

The SilkWings have names related to butterflies and moths, such as Blue, Luna, and Swordtail. While SilkWings love gardens, they aren’t usually named after flowers – that’s more of a RainWing or LeafWing trait. If a SilkWing has a flower name, it’s usually because that flower is the specific host plant for a certain butterfly!

• Admiral: A regal, red-and-black scaled dragon named after the Red Admiral butterfly; known for being a natural leader.
• Atlas: A massive dragon with wide, patterned wings resembling the giant Atlas Moth; they are incredibly strong for a SilkWing.
• Cinnabar: A dragon with striking black and bright pink scales, named after the colorful Cinnabar moth.

• Viceroy: A dragon who looks remarkably like a Monarch but is much smaller and quicker on their feet.

HiveWings

The HiveWings have names related to wasps and bees, such as Wasp, Bumblebee, Lady Scarab, and Cadelle. HiveWing names often sound a bit more “menacing” or “industrial” than SilkWing names to reflect their role as the dominant, more aggressive tribe on Pantala.

• Afire: Named after the Afire Ant; a reddish-black dragon known for a short temper and a very painful “bite.”
• Bombardier: A high-ranking soldier named after the Bombardier Beetle, specializing in chemical warfare or acid-spitting.
• Chalcid: Named after the tiny Chalcid Wasp; a small, brilliant metallic-green dragon who is an expert at finding tiny details.
• Digger: A sturdy, powerful dragon named after the Digger Wasp, known for their ability to tunnel through Hive structures.
• Hornet: A fierce, aggressive flyer with bright yellow-and-black stripes who serves in the HiveWing elite guard.
• Jewel: Named after the Jewel Beetle; a flashy, arrogant dragon with shimmering, iridescent scales who loves the high life.
• Locust: A dragon with an insatiable appetite who is known for traveling in large groups and leaving nothing behind.

LeafWings

LeafWings have a very literal naming convention. Since their tribe is divided into two factions (the PoisonWings and the SapWings), their names often reflect their personality or their faction’s philosophy.

PoisonWings are usually named after dangerous, toxic, or carnivorous plants (like Sundew, Belladonna, and Hemlock). And SapWings are named after sturdy trees, peaceful forest features, or non-toxic plants (like Willow, Sequoia, and Hazel).

• Aconite: Named after the “Queen of Poisons”, a beautiful but extremely dangerous dragon who specializes in long-range combat.
• Banyan: A massive, ancient-looking dragon with scales that look like tangled roots, known for being a wise storyteller.
